Białowieża Forest and Białowieża National Park

The Białowieża Forest is the best-preserved natural European forest complex. Its area covers an area of 150,000. ha and extends over the territory of Poland (62.5 thousand ha) and Belarus (87.5 thousand ha). The natural wealth of the Forest and its natural character are the result of centuries of protection provided by the rulers of the eastern part of Europe: the kings of Poland and the princes of Lithuania. The biological diversity of the Forest is based on the enormous wealth of species of mushrooms, plants and animals, which are often relict.

However, the Białowieża Forest could not lose its second ruler - the huge effort of naturalists saved the bison population. Now the Białowieża Forest is inhabited by half a thousand of these animals, and it is the largest bison population in the world.

The fauna is represented by many species of animals, including: bison, elk, roe deer, deer, wild boars, wolves, lynxes, beavers, badgers, capercaillies, and cranes. In the forest there are bison and tarpan breeding reserves, which are one of the most valuable natural objects in Poland. In 1932, the Białowieża National Park was established here.

The Białowieża National Park protects the best-preserved part of the Białowieża Forest, which has survived human pressure. The park protects the last natural forest in Europe's lowlands, which centuries ago stretched into a zone of deciduous and mixed forests. Most of the forests within the Park are of different ages and multi-species. They are characterized by an unprecedented wealth of plants, fungi and animals. Many of the species living here are typical of primary forests. For many of them, the Park is their last refuge.

The forest area of the Park is formed by a mosaic of different types of forest intertwining. Here you will see dark forests and rich oak-hornbeam forests, in which oaks, lindens and ash trees grow of majestic size. You will be delighted with the picturesqueness of the hard-to-reach alder forests and riverine riparian forests.

Any time of the year is suitable to come here. In spring, you will be greeted by the noise of birds busy building nests. In summer, you will notice the multicolored blooming plants in the forest clearings and meadows, as well as the variety of species of butterflies, beetles and hymenopterans hanging above them. Morning fog interspersed with sunlight and the sounds of deer during the rut - these are unforgettable impressions of your autumn stay. The calming silence interrupted only by the occasional evening howl of wolves and the hooting of owls, as well as the beautifully snow-covered forest trees encourage you to come here in winter.
